December's Featured Farm:
Casa Cattle Company - Corinna, ME
Our featured farm for the month of December is Casa Cattle Company, located in the town of Corinna, Maine. The family run farm is owned and operated by New England Galloway Group (NEGG) secretary, Corinna Caron along with her husband Jesse, and children Ashton and Abigail.
The family joined the Belted Galloway world in 2007. The decision came after countless hours spent boiling sap with their neighbors, the Sawtelle family. One night the idea arised, “let’s raise some cows” and so it began. Casa Cattle Company was born combining the two-family names. On Mother’s Day weekend in the spring of 2007 a cattle trailer driven by current NEGG president, Randy Hall, pulled in loaded with 3 Belted Galloways. The family had officially gotten their start in the cattle business.
The original intent of the operation was to be a breakeven beef producer. They would have enough meat to get themselves by and they would offset the cost by selling an animal in turn. The families quickly realized they had so much more than that with their “belted beauties” – they were shocked by the attention these cattle were causing.
With a new mindset, the families set out to expand their herd. Not only had demand for their delicious beef risen, the Caron children had began to spark interest in showing the cattle. After attending the NEGG National Belted Galloway Sale, held annually in Fryeburg, ME, in addition to multiple farm visits the families had taken the operation to the next level.
In January of 2015, the two families decided to split the herd due to a heavily growing interest in showing the cattle and becoming involved in 4H programs. The families agreed to split the original herd and the Caron’s began showing cattle at youth shows and fairs all across the state. Ashton and Abigail both became active members of their local 4H program, and to date continue to show their cattle through New England, with hopes to one day hit the green shavings in Louisville, Kentucky at the National Belted Galloway Show.
In addition to their new journey in the show cattle world, the family has also began to diversify their farm by recently importing a purebred White Galloway heifer from Canada. The family hopes to now start a purebred White Galloway herd to compliment their Belted Galloway herd. This will be an asset to both the show cattle and meat production portions of the business.
Today, the farm currently homes approximately 20 head of Belted and White Galloway cattle. The family regularly offers beef, pork and chicken to retail meat customers and is well known for their quality products, especially their Belted Galloway Beef! In addition, the farm also sells Registered Belted Galloway breeding stock and would be happy to have you visit their operation.
The family would also like to extend their gratitude to the New England Galloway Group community for their support and advice over the past several years. Jesse and Corinna contribute their success to the friends they have made along the way and to their children for their continued hard work and determination.
